Recently St.Helens Council and its partners scooped two major national Beacon Scheme awards in the ‘local government Oscars’ that recognise excellence.
Now the Council has been sharing its award winning ways at the formal launch of the Raising Economic Prosperity through Partnership programme at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.
St.Helens took part in workshops and led the debate regarding the role of the private sector in helping deprived communities. It also lead discussions on sustainable development, the City Growth Strategy, and the St Helens Business Start-Up Programme. Kath Boullen. Chief Executive of St.Helens Chamber also joined the panel of experts to answer questions on tackling the recession.
In partnership with St.Helens Chamber , the Council won the Raising Economic Prosperity Through Partnership award.
Communities Minister Sadiq Khan, who presented the awards, said: “St.Helens Council is among the top performers in their field, setting the standard for innovation, service excellence and improvement."
St.Helens was judged to be second to none in its ability to deliver regeneration projects successfully, including the LEGI programme which created over 800 jobs in its first year.
The Council and Chamber of Commerce were applauded for the way they tackled unemployment which was once high and is now the lowest on Merseyside. The ambitious ‘Dream’ public art project was also singled out for the way it had involved the local community.
* Working alongside Helena Partnership and Arena Housing, the Council was also awarded Beacon Status for the Homes for the Future award.
St.Helens and Lancashire County Council were the only Councils from a shortlist of 62 to win two awards outright.
